A number of other Vietnamese players were knocked out of the competition’s qualifying round, including Trần Quyết Chiến (world number three), Nguyễn Quốc Nguyện ( 一 一), Mã Minh Cẩm ( 二 三) and Dương Anh Vũ ( 三 一).

During the first round of matches in Group F, Chiến lost out to Daniel Sanchez of Spain, world number  一 六, by a score of  二 七- 四0.

In the second match of the group, the Vietnamese player was held by Birol Uymaz of Turkey, world number  二 八, to a draw.

In the final tie of Group F, Chiến recorded a victory over Jeremy Bury of France, world number  一0, while Sanchez suffered a defeat at the hands of Uymaz.

After three matches, Chiến and Uymaz both had recorded one win, one draw and one loss. However, due to point differentials, the Vietnamese player suffered elimination.
